Relentless French Fries

Last weekend I was over at Long Beach on a date.

We spent the day exploring the marina by the “Aquarium of the Pacific”. It was such a great weekend. The weather was terrific and just the right amount of people. Not too crowded and not too empty.

Several hours in, we started getting hungry and began looking for a place to eat. All the places looked good but we just didn’t know where to start. I ended up picking a pizza parlor by the pier.

Now before you go calling me a hypocrite, I live a lifestyle of healthy eating habits and exercise.

That Saturday was my day off to treat myself, and I did. We shared a pizza, some cherry icee and some french fries.

Keep in mind that even if we’re eating this kind of food, we still maintain a moderate portion size as we just share our food.

Anyway, to add more to my already plain pizza, I decided to add a few dashes of parmesean cheese along with some ground up peppers.

Honestly, we shouldn’t deprive ourselves from the foods we absolutely love.

Just don’t be gluttonous about it. The french fries came last and it looked like it was deep fried in fish batter. Not only did it look good but it tasted great too!

Now, I kind of like having a little bit of spice on my food so I wanted to put some of the grounded peppers on the fries.

I tried dashing a little bit of the peppers on the fries but it just fell to the bottom. The woman I was with said that they’re not going to stick. As relentless as I am, I decided to give it another crack.

She laughed and told me to just give up. After I heard that, I knew then and there that I had to get those peppers to stick on the fries. I yelled back, “No!, I don’t quit… the pepper will stick”.

I kept on trying but it just wouldn’t stick.

As I was about to put the shaker down and give up, I gave it one more dash and a speck of red pepper landed on a fry. Finally! I found a little success.

As I was about to eat the french fry, she asks me if it’s even any good. I respond, “This is the best french fry I’ve ever had”.

In life, we put relentless effort to achieve a goal. More often than not, it seems like we don’t see any results. We just have to look beyond the image of big success and appreciate the small success we accomplish.

Even if that equates to you only losing a pound that week.

In the game of health, any success is a big one.

The Key Lifestyle Change to Keeping the Weight Off

So if you’ve read my book you know that I lost about 50 pounds in less than six months. I think it was 3 months and 2 weeks to be exact.

Before I had planned to lose my weight, I already heard of people dropping pounds quick but end up gaining back more weight than they lost. This really scared me because I don’t like my hard work to be in vein.

As I did more research on how the body works I realized that this didn’t have to be a concern because all I had to do was work with my body’s natural functions and not revert to my old habits.

So a lot of people who’ve been on diets, or people who lost weight but gained it back and more ask me, “How do you keep the weight off!?”. I simply smirk at them because just the way they were asking tells me that they were looking for an easy solution.

I could tell them how, but would they really listen? Would they really apply it? Or am I just simply wasting my breathe? Curious about the solution? I already mentioned it, just read a few lines up. To make it more clear, it’s a lifestyle change.

If you want things to change, you have to change.

You can’t simply just work out and expect the weight to stay off once you stop stop and go back to your old ways of eating bad and being a couch potato. But you must not starve yourself either!

If you’re going through something like this, well, I’m not going to sit here and blow sunshine up your ass and tell you it’s easy. Go see your doctor for a physical first.

So how does food and the body work together?

We all know that calories are the source of fuel for the body, and if those calories aren’t used, the body stores them as fat. Yes, the body is really efficient that way. It’s meant to survive by any means necessary. If only our cars could do that huh?

So how do you keep the weight off by eating? It’s really simple, you just got to eat! Eat constantly, but that doesn’t mean eat more. I used to eat 2 meals a day, 3 if I was lucky. No wonder I kept gaining weight no matter how much I tried to lose it.

The worst part was I’d eat a really light breakfast and something really heavy for dinner right before going to sleep. Bad! Your metabolism naturally slows down at night so your body won’t be able to process all those calories you took in from that heavy meal.

Also your body burns an average of about 1200 calories while you sleep, so if you took in 1500 calories from going to TGI Fridays or BJs, your body really won’t be burning off any calories, just the one’s that you took in and you’ll still have a left over of 300 calories to store. Hmmm.

Here’s another thing. Remember how I said I used to consume 2-3 meals a day? Well there’s a 4-6 hour gap in between those meals. When your body goes 2-3 hours without food it automatically goes into starvation mode, so any food you consume “AUTOMATICALLY” becomes converted to FAT.

The rule of thumb in losing weight is to burn off more calories than you take in.

What’s the first step?

By the way this also applies for keeping the weight off. You must EAT. At least 5 to 6 meals a day, nothing more and nothing less. If you’re going to skip a meal it better be the very last, remember how I told you that your body burns off calories while you sleep?

This process of constantly consuming food lets the body know that it doesn’t need to store the calories so it just burns it off. Also, the process of digestion and metabolizing burns calories AND this boosts up your metabolism so your calorie burning is consistent.

There’s a difference between eating 6 small portioned healthy meals compared to eating 6 meals worth of big macs, fries, double double, pizza, soda, and a snickers. That wasn’t sarcasm, there are people who eat that on a daily basis.

Our body is SUPER EFFICIENT so if we become over weight or obese, it’s our fault and our fault only! We have the power to change it though.

People who suffer from obesity (generalization) claim that they should be treated like a handicapped person. They claim that that’s just the way they are. I really hate to laugh and poke fun because I’ve been there too. But the truth is, most of these people are only looking for an easy solution and that’s just not going to cut it.

In my case, it’s not a matter of keeping the weight off, it’s a matter of keeping my old habits away. Sure my weight fluctuates but I’ve never even come close to going back to my 215 pound ways. It’s a lifestyle change, and that’s how the weight never came back.
